Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay instantly became enthralled when she showed her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced her to say something through the arts. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of an individual Jury member. As a result of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be a junior publicist at the studio that was small. In this role, she launched her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
